ZAIS Financial Corp. invests in residential mortgage loans in the United States. The company operates in two segments, Residential Mortgage Investments and Residential Mortgage Banking. It originates, sells, and services mortgage loans through its GMFS mortgage banking platform; and acquires performing, re-performing, and newly originated loans through other channels. The company also invests in, finances, and manages residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS) that are not issued or guaranteed by a federally chartered corporation. In addition, it invests in RMBS that are issued or guaranteed by a federally chartered corporation or a U.S. Government agency, as well as in other real estate-related and financial assets, such as interest only strips created from RMBS. The company qualifies as a real estate investment trust for federal income tax purposes. It generally would not be subject to federal corporate income taxes if it distributes at least 90% of its taxable income to its stockholders.
